"Sisters Sharing" Campaign Addresses Social Issues Faced by Women and Girls during Hurricane Katrina
About this event: Sisters Sharing Stories of Hope and Help at the AKA Women and Girls Conference
Related to country: United States

WASHINGTON, DC--During the "Sisters Sharing: Building Foundations for Life" conference hosted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s Xi Omega Chapter on September 30th at the University of the District of Columbia, Postcards from Katrina TM showcased ads from its "Sisters Sharing" campaign targeting women of color who faced and continue to overcome the challenges post-Hurricane Katrina.

"Being a woman of color from Oklahoma, it's imperative I initiate this campaign given the shared wisdom and strength that other women of color have passed on to me. That's why Postcards from Katrina project is addressing the issues faced by many women and girls in the aftermath of the storm," said Tambra Stevenson, creator of Postcards from Katrina. "If my mom and sister who live in the U.S. southwest central region faced the catastrophic level of Katrina, I would want to raise awareness and action of hope and help is still needed for the women who are 'glue' in keeping families together."

Postcards from Katrina is a grassroots community arts project to use the power of arts to express what Katrina means to people affected by the disaster. Many people who faced Katrina have not handled the mental health issues and arts has healing process that can help and inspire other people to be empowered and make a difference in their lives and communities.

"Seasoned Sisters" is one of 10+ public service announcements created by Postcards from Katrina's "Sisters Sharing" social marketing campaign to address the social, financial, emotional and health issues faced by women and girls of color during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Pfk Creator, Tambra Stevenson, encourages people to circulate and post the PSAs to friends, family, youth, colleagues and organizations to spread the message that "hope still lies there in the sea of despair." PfK wants to hear your story of what Katrina means to you.

PfK invites you to send a homemade postcard, art, music or poetry reflecting theme of hope and help to mailto:postcardsfromkatrina@gmail.com or to Postcards from Katrina, 38 T Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001.
